Telling Stories

 Robyn Smith and Carly Gilliatt have an exhibition of paintings and felt-work telling stories of time spent in places real or imagined.

The exhibition runs from 29th October 2024 - 10th November 2024 and is being held in the Indigo Crow Gallery, 57 Burton Road, Lincoln LN1 3JY.


Robyn will be on site on Thursday and both Carly and herself will in attending on both Fridays.  They look forward to seeing you there.

October 2024 Stitch Club - Textile Cards

 For our next stitch club which will be on Saturday 16th November, Jill will provide us with the opportunity to make 3 different textile cards.

1.  Simple appliqué tree scene
2.  Foundation pieced tree
3.  Mindful stitched robin

Please bring along -
- your sewing kit
- selection of threads
- any fabrics you might want to use, including Xmas prints, cream/white fabrics & lace etc
- any suitable embellishments

Jill will provide fabrics from her workroom, bondaweb for appliqué, foundation layouts, card stock, glue

We will have plenty of time to make multiple cards.


Hopefully Kate will be brining an iron for us to use, along with some baking paper to protect it from the Bondaweb.

As always please bring a packed lunch.  Tea/coffee/biscuits will be provided.
Cost: £5.00 for members, £7.50 for non-members

Our October Stitch Club

 There were seven of us for the October stitch club, where Kathy led us in making folk embroidered birds.  Good results from everyone and we all enjoyed ourselves very much.


Our next stitch club will be on Saturday 16th November as usual at the Thomas Garrett rooms in Heighington, from 10:00 - 15:00 when Jill will be showing us how to create Christmas cards using various techniques.

Members £5.00, non-members £7.50.  If interested in attending please let either Judith or Jacqui know as soon as possible.

October 2024 Stitch Club - Folk Embroidered Birds

Our next stitch club will be on Saturday 19th October from 10:00 - 15:00 at the Thomas Garrett Rooms, Heighington.

Kathy will be leading us in making folk embroidered birds:


Requirements List

  • Felt if you have some (if not, don't buy any as Vanda has a large supply that she will be bringing.  A lot of it is white, but if mixed with red, will give a Scandinavian look)
  • Embroidery threads
  • Thin ribbon
  • Basic sewing kit
Kathy will be providing the stuffing.

The birds can be on loops to hang as decorations or on gift bags.  Or they can be a garland with a long length of ribbon running through several of them.

Jacqui will be sending out an email to members shortly.  Please reply and let her know if you are coming or not.

As per usual, tea/coffee/biscuits will be provided.  Please bring a packed lunch.

September's Christmas Bauble Stitch Club

 An enjoyable day was had by all at the September stitch club where we used polystyrene balls to create Christmas baubles.  Here's how we got on:

September Stitch Club: Christmas Bauble - 14th September 2024

 Our next stitch club will be on Saturday 14th September - please note the date, we had to bring it forward by one week due to double booking.

Judith will be showing how to make Christmas baubles like the ones below.  Requirements list is below the photos.




Requirements List

  • Polystyrene ball
  • Pencil
  • Tape measure
  • Craft Knife
  • Blunt tool/knife to push fabric into slots
  • Christmas cotton fabric - possibly 2 designs or more
  • Gold cord or bobbles (gold, silver or white) to cover edges of the fabric
  • Fabric glue
  • Fabric scissors
  • 1/4" ribbon to coordinate with fabric, to decorate top and make a loop to hang the bauble
  • Glass headed pins, maybe useful for attaching sequins and small beads or other decorations to the top and bottom of bauble
  • Sequins and small beads could be used at the top and bottom of the bauble, or you can get filigree caps to cover the ends of ribbon etc.
As usual, please bring a packed lunch.  Tea, coffee, biscuits will be provided.  To be held at the Thomas Garrett Building, Heighington between 10:00 and 15:00.

July's Traditional Hardanger Stitch Club

 For the final time before our summer break, we collected at the Thomas Garrett Building for a go at traditional Hardanger.  A good time was had by all and we produced the following:

July Stitch Club - Traditional Hardanger: 20th July 2024

 Our next stitch club will be held on Saturday 20th July 2024 at the Thomas Garrett Building, Heighington, Lincoln, where Jacqui will be teaching us Hardanger to create a mini sampler as illustrated below.

Traditionally, Hardanger is done white-on-white, but if you like you may use coloured or variegated thread instead. 



Requirements List

  •  22 count evenweave fabric 12" square, or a 25 count evenweave such as Zweigart Lugana 9" square
  • If using 22 count, then 1 skein of DMC Coton Perle No 5 and one ball of DMC Coton Perle No 8 in a matching colour of your choice.
  • If using 25 count, then 1 ball of DMC Coton Perle No 8 and one ball of DMC Coton Perle No 12 in a matching colour of your choice.
  • Tapestry needles 22 for Perle 5, 24 for Perle 8 and 26 for Perle 12.
  • Embroidery scissors
OR if you've never done Hardanger before, there is a smaller more simple sampler you can try which will need a 5" square of 22 count hardanger. This will require DMC Coton Perle 5 and 8.

Jacqui will be bringing some 22 count evenweave and 25 count material if you have none.

As usual, please let Judith know if you are coming.  Cost is £5.00 for members and £7.50 for non-members.

Yarn Hooking Badges

 A good day was had by all at yesterday's stitch club, where Judith instructed us in how to make yarn hooking badges.  The air didn't turn too blue either as everyone got to grips with the stitch!!!


As you can see, some were more adventurous than others!!!!

Our next stitch club will be on Saturday 20th July 2024, where we will be doing Hardanger embroidery.

June Stitch Club - Yarn Hooking Badges

 Our next stitch club is on Saturday 22nd June 2024 at the Thomas Garrett Building, Heighington.  Please note the date, as we had to put it back one week.  As normal the stitch club will run from 10:00 - 15:00.

Judith will be teaching us to make Yarn Hooked Badges as illustrated:




Requirements List

  • 15 cm square close weave hessian (Judith will bring some with her if you don't have any)
  • 9cm embroidery hoop
  • Either a No 1 or 1.25 or 1.5 or 2.00 crochet hook
  • Badge pin or safety pin
  • 7cm square piece of felt for backing.
  • Light weight piece of card - to hold badge in shape
  • Double knitting wool in chosen colours (depending on design)
  • Sewing thread and needle to attach pin and felt
  • Scissors
Please advise Judith if you will be attending so we have an idea of numbers.

May Stitch Club - Stumpwork - 18th May 2024

 In our next stitch club, Jacqui will show us different ways of creating stumpwork (3D embroidery) to create a piece of your choice.  The photos below show just one example of what can be done.



Jacqui Will provide the outline design of the above or, you can create your own design.  Whatever you choose, don't make it too large.  The example above is approximately five inches.

Requirements List
  • Background fabric, reasonably heavy.  If choosing silk, back it with calico. Make it around 12" x 12".
  • Cotton fabric to create petals and leaves.  To be safe make it 2 pieces 6" x 6"
  • An 8" hoop (preferably in a sit on frame, but not important if you don't have one)
  • A 4" hoop to create the 3D elements
  • 2 shades of green stranded cotton for the stems and leaves
  • 4 colours for the pansy, one of which should be black
  • 3" square of felt for padding
  • Florists or cake wire (size 30 if you can get it)
  • 1 long pin
  • String or thin cord
  • A few seed beads to compliment your flower
  • Normal sewing kit, scissors
We are going to practice a number of different techniques to create a flower.  

If anyone is interested, there is one other technique I can show you, but you will need white cotton fabric for that and a small amount of kapok.

Jacqui will have the required wire if you need it.

Please let Judith know if you are planning to attend, so she can let Jacqui know how many sets of instructions to bring.

Serviette Box or Gift Box

 Everyone had an enjoyable time at the April stitch club, where Judith showed us how to make cloth covered boxes that could be used for gifts or serviettes.  We created different size ones.  Most are still a work in progress!

By using Christmas themed material you can also make small Christmas gift boxes by changing the dimensions, or for any other occasion.





Our next stitch club will be on Saturday 18th May, 10:00 - 15:00 again at the Thomas Garrett Buildings, Heighington, where Jacqui will be taking us through various ways of creating stumpwork embroidery using padded stitches, cord, felt and stuffing.  A requirements list will be posted in a week or so.

April Stitch Club - Serviette Box or Gift Box - 20th April 2024

In our forthcoming April stitch club, Saturday 20th April, Judith will be showing us how to make a serviette box or gift box, like the ones below.




You will create a pattern whatever size you want, so it could be a small gift box.  Below are the requirements to make a 7" box to fit serviettes:

Box

  • 1 base 7" x 7"
  • 4 sides 7" x 3" or 4" high
Lid
  • 1 top 7 1/4" x 7 1/4" high
  • 4 side 7 1/4" x 1" high
Lighter card for lining inside:

Box
  • 1 base 6 3/4" x 6 3/4"
  • 4 sides 6 3/4" x 2 3/4" or 3 3/4"
Lid
  • 7" x7"
Fabric - firm weave - furnishing or cotton or outside
              cotton for the lining inside.
Enough fabric to cover box, sides, lid and sides - 1/2" metre (this should be enough to make 2).  As long as you have a piece 8" x 36" for the sides of the box and lid; you could use remnants.

A piece of interlining 8" x 36" for the sides of the box and lid.
Thin wadding enough to cover the outside of the card for the box, lid and sides.
Pirtt stick glue or any glue that dries quickly to attach wadding and interlining to the card.
Double sided tape.
Matching thread for the main outside fabric
Thread for using to hold fabric on card.
Sewing needles.
Scissors, fabric, paper, light card.
Curring mat for cutting thick card and craft knife.
Ruler and pencil.

Embroidered Pod - March 2024

A lovely day was had by all, as Vanessa kindly led us through creating an embroidered pod that could be used to store a timble in, or perhaps used to store earrings or some other small gift to present to a loved one:






Well done everyone!  The pods are all so very different.

Our next stitch club will be on Saturday April 20th, when Judith will be leading us through making a small cloth covered box.  Further details will be posted shortly.

March Stitch Club - Embroidered Pod with Vanessa - 16th March 2024

 Our next stitch club will be on Saturday 16th March 2024 again at the  Thomas Garrett buildings in Heighton, starting at 10:00 am and going through to 3:00 pm.

Requirements List

  • 8 inch square of firm fabric e.g. medium weight cotton,
  • 6 inch embroidery hoop
  • Embroidery threads (Perle 5 and 8 and/or stranded cotton.
  • Felt for lining.
  • Sewing thread to match fabric/lining when joining lining to outer piece.
  • Glue stick e.g. Pritt or similar
  • Small beads/sequins (looptional)
  • Pencil
  • Usual sewing kit including embroidery and tapestry needles.
Vanessa will bring the card templates for everyone.

Our Embroidered Photos

 A good day was had by all.  We worked on two photos, one for practice to see if the stitches worked, and then the actual photo.  The first shot is of a practice piece and the rest are the actual work.  Note, one of our members did collage instead of stitches.

February 2024 Stitch Club - Embroidery on Photos

UPDATE:

Kathy has suggested that you print your photos onto white card, rather than photo paper.  It's much easier to work on and it won't need backing for stability. 


Our next stitch club will be on Saturday 17th February, at the Thomas Garett  Buildings, Heighington, starting at 10:00 am and going through until 3:00 pm.

Kathy will be showing us how to embroider on photographs.

Requirements List

  • Black and white photos
  • Embroidery threads
  • Basic sewing kit
  • Awl / hat pin / darning needle to pre-prick out holes for embroidery
  • Self-healing cutting mat
If you don't have all the items, Don't go out and buy it, we can share between us.

Kathy will bring a supply of black and white photos if you don't have any, and will also bring a supply of card to back the photos and add stability.

If you are unable to print off your photos, please email them to: sojourner@virginmedia.com and Kathy will print them off for you.
