The Luttrell Psalter at the F&E Show

It took six hours to put up the exhibition, but we were very pleased with the way it looked. We had one of the largest stands at the Show.

I never expected the reaction we got - the visitors absolutely loved it. So many people said it was the best they'd seen all day.

The letters created a lot of interest and many people thought they were stitched on leather - luckily we had a little sample with us so we could explain the technique to people.

Beaky was very popular (and is thinking of setting up his own fan club). I'm sure he had a run round overnight. He does look evil doesn't he.

The 16 foot banners we had at The Collection were split up so we could include them in the exhibition. The vessels looked good and provided another dimension.

People were very interested in our work with HMP Morton Hall and were very impressed with the standard of the work.

The Young Embroiderers work also attracted a lot of attention and the visitors loved the colours and the cheekiness of the work.

WAG Screen loaned us some of the costumes from their film, but we had to leave the ploughman behind as we ran out of space. I'm sure we got some funny looks driving up the A1 with the bodies in the back of the car!
Thank you everyone who made work for the exhibition, Mavis for lending us her copy of The Psalter, to Heather for her help setting up and stewarding and to Jackie, Annette and Mary for stewarding. It's been great fun.

Luttrell Psalter Workshop 26th July

Don't forget it's the next Luttrell Psalter workshop on Thursday. At Bailgate, from 7pm to 9.30 pm. Bring your work in progress, or just your image if you've not started and we'll help with ideas.

I've been working on the rotated patterns we did with Heather in the first workshop.

Luttrell Psalter Project

For those of you who don't already know, the Lincoln Bailgate branch of the Embroiderers Guild is undertaking a project based on the Luttrell Psalter - LP for short!

The LP is a medieval manuscript which was produced for Sir Geoffrey Luttrell who lived in Irnham (near Grantham) and this is one of the reasons it is so relevant to our group. There's going to be a big exhibition at The Collection in Lincoln next year, which will run from May to September. We are producing embroidered panels based on the imagery in the Psalter.

The LP lives at the British Museum in London and you can find out more information about it by clicking here. The story about the Psalter and medieval life is fascinating.

The British Library has an online collection of photos, which includes over 200 from the LP - click here. The images in the margins are truly amazing - scenes of rural life, religious scenes and amazing grotesques, leafy twirls and line-end patterns. No wonder so many of us have been inspired to take part

We run monthly workshops to support members in this project, helping with the design and techniques to use. The next workshop is July 26th at Bailgate Methodist Church, Lincoln. Please let me know if you would like to take part in the project.

There's also a sister project in Lincoln about the LP, which concentrates on reproducing the historical elements for a short film that is being produced for The Collection. Click here for more information.
