July Stitch Club - Sashiko Sunglasses Case

Our next stitch club will be on Saturday 19th July, when Kathy will be taking us through making a sunglasses case using Sashiko embroidery techniques.  You don't have to make the case, if you prefer you can make a panel for a bag or cushion, or just a sampler.

There will be four stencils/patterns to choose from.

Requirements

  • Fabric:  2 layers 20cm x 20cm
  • Outer layer:  Middle/heavyweight cotton.  (Traditionally, Sashiko embroidery is on plain indigo fabric, so Indigo/dark navy is ideal, but it's your choice)
  • Fusible interfacing if the fabric is lightweight.
  • Inner layer:  Fleece, brushed cotton or even soft cotton to protect lenses.  The inner doesn't need to be plain.
  • Basic sewing kit with pins or clips
  • Paper cutting scissors
  • Matching thread to sew case
  • Fabric marker to use with stencil
  • Kathy will bring some white gel pens which work well but are indelible
  • White embroidery thread for Sashiko.  Some of you may have Sashiko thread in your stash, but Kathy has used regular embroidery floss.  All 6 threads in the skein will be used.  Cheap Trimits threat works well as it's coarser.  Kathy will have some available.
Venue:  Thomas Garrett Rooms, Heighington
Time:    10:00 - 15:00
Cost:     £5.00 members; £7.50 non-members
Please bring a packed lunch.  Tea/coffee/biscuits will be available all day.

June Stitch Club - Embossed Metal in Embroidered Panel

For our June stitch club, Kate will be taking us through creating an embossed metal panel to be included in an embroidered panel of your own working.

Requirements List

  • Thin sheet of metal - Kate has collected a good quantity of these, so you don't need to bring any unless you want to.
  • Tomato paste tube or other tubes made of thin metal, cleaned and cut open (as remembered by Kathy)
  • Aluminium ready meal containers (as suggested by Julie).  Please note, cooking foil on a roll is too thin to work with unless you are very confident.
Kate will be bringing:
  • Thin foam sheets so you can emboss on them to get a bit of depth
  • A selection of tools for embossing the metal.  These need to be ball-point or blunt so as not to rip or puncture the metal.
Think about the pattern you want to emboss; this can be a simple as diagonal lines or a more complex image such as a flower.

You will also need:
  • Scissors to cut the metal to size
  • Fabric for your backing cloth (a top fabric and thin calico underneath to give it some substance)
  • Robust needle to make holes in the metal to attach it to the fabric
  • Embroidery threads
  • Beads, thin ribbon, additional little bits of fabric or felt
  • Ideas about the stitches you might want to use
  • Sewing kit with fabric scissors

Date: Saturday 21st June 2025
Venue: Thomas Garrett Building, Heighington
Time:  10:00 - 15:00
Cost:  Members - £5.00, non-members - £7.50

April Stitch Club - Omiyage Bag

April saw us making Omiyage Bags under the guidance of Vanessa.  Everyone had fun making these little bags which were all done by hand.  A comment was made that a lot more could be made if a sewing machine was used to sew the seams!

See below for some examples that were completed on the day.

Our next stitch club will be on Saturday 17th May when we will be embroidering leaves, under the guidance of Bron.  More details to follow.

Omiyage Bag

Our next stitch club will see Vanessa take us through the process of making an Omiyage Bag (a small triangular bag).  Requirements list as follows:

  • 2 pieces of fabric 25cm square: one for the right side and one for the lining.  Please note, the lining shows on the finished bag where the triangle points are folded back.  Don't make the fabric too thick as pins have to go through 4 layers of fabric.  Cotton or silk would be ideal; plain or all over pattern as folding makes stripes or "right way up" pattern unsuitable.
  • Fabric scissors, sewing needles and pins
  • Tape measure or ruler
  • Sewing thread to join seams on the right side of the bag
  • Small beads or buttons to decorate the triangular points or embroidery threads if you want to stich a small motif on each point.
  • Extra beads in you want to decorate bag seams (optional)
  • Cord or ribbon to make drawstring closure.  Not needed if you prefer to 9mit closure and use the bag as a fabric pot.
Date:   Saturday 26th April 2025

Time: 10:00 - 15:00

Venue: Thomas Garrett Buildings, Heighington

Cost: £5.00 members, £7.50 non-members

Please bring a packed lunch.  Tea/coffee/biscuits provided.  Shop near to procure sandwiches etc if preferred.

Please let Jacqui or Judith know if you are coming, thank you.

March Stitch Club - Textile Collage

Our next stitch club will be on Saturday 15th March when we will be doing Textile Collage with Kate.  As usual it runs from 10:00 - 15:00 at the Thomas Garrett Rooms, Heighington.

Kate will bring:

  • ·     a little iron and towel to iron on; water spray
  • ·         lots of fabric pieces and a bag of felt bits
  • ·         some fine felt tip pens
  • ·         staple gun
  • ·         collection of narrow ribbons

You will need

  • ·        Ideas for your image – landscape, decorative abstract or maybe you will be inspired by photos you have taken or images in magazines.
  • ·         Maybe buy a picture frame from a charity shop. This then gives you the size of your image. Alternatively your worked fabric can be attached (with a staple gun or drawing pins) after completion to a canvas over a frame (sold in art departments such as in the Range).
  • ·         Backing fabric, larger than the size of your finished work. Calico is a good strong base to work on.
  • ·         Fabrics of your choice to suit your image
  • ·         Scissors
  • ·         glue – Pritt stick style is OK for thin fabric and uhu type for thicker fabric
  • ·         If you are adding stitch, then bring your embroidery threads and the rest of your kit
  • ·         Beads and ribbons if you like

The three examples above are all glued textiles

Cost of the class is £5.00 for members and £7.50 to non-members.

If you are planning on attending, please let Judith or Jacqui know.  Thank you.  we look forward to seeing you there.
