I walk the line - an exhibition at Sam Scorer Gallery 16th Feb-1st March 2015

Our former branch chair Janet Taylor is involved in this exhibition as part of her new role as Bishop Grosseteste Year Two Visual Art student.

Open daily 10-5 (closed Mondays)

I walk the line is taken from the title of Johnny Cash’s first hit song. It was a proclamation of fidelity and a ‘note to self’ while the singer was touring the USA and tempted by adoring fans. When he was still in his first marriage, the singer himself recalled “It was kind of a prodding to myself to, `Play it straight, Johnny,’”. A line from the song – ‘I keep a close watch on this heart of mine, I keep my eyes wide open all the time’ is fitting for art students who negotiate the demands of an academic training with the somewhat tacit requirement in developing a personal ‘voice’ or ‘signature’. The song’s call for vigilance is also apposite, both literally and metaphorically when creating art works relevant to contemporary practice.
