Jacqui's stitch club in June 2019 will teach us something similar

BBC4 - Homemade in Mexico: Huipil
A huipil is a loose-fitting tunic, generally made from two or three rectangular pieces of fabric which are then joined together with stitching, ribbons or fabric strips, with an opening for the head and, if the sides are sewn, openings for the arms. Tehuana dresses are crafted by Zapotec women who live in a matriarchal culture. They elaborately embroider very elegant dresses made of velvet or silk, which they wear at religious ceremonies and fiestas. These dresses were famously worn by Frida Kahlo. The huipiles originate from crafts developed to meet very utilitarian needs, but became more decorative as time went on and now they are regarded as objects of status.

These Mexican women are both wearing a huipil. There are skirts that are made to match, all with amazing flower embroidery.

Marianne Young's Collection of Work, 27th July 2018

Marianne talked us through her large collection of textile art, some of which she had created herself (see the underwater scene above) but most of which she had discovered from various locations and purchased to add to her collection. It was great to see her appreciation of such a range of delicate work and her enthusiasm rubbed off onto us too; she encouraged us to handle some of the pieces and pointed out the sort of embroidery involved. It was a delightful evening spent in congenial company.

Saturday 1st September 2018 'walk in workshop' open to everyone to be held at Fabric Corner

Christine Plummer is running  a WALK IN WORKSHOP at “FABRIC CORNER’ Broadgate Lincoln. The theme is a ‘stitched book’.

We are keen to recruit new members for next year, so it would be good to put on a small exhibition of members’ work. If you feel you could contribute to this, could you please bring your items on the day. Please attach a label, so your work can be returned to you. If anyone would be prepared to help out at one of the sessions, contact Christine textiles@christineplummer.co.uk

Regional Kickstart Project - Geology and Fossils, starting September/October 2018

In late September at our AGM the project will be introduced and in October Christine will run a one day workshop, linked to the Regional Kickstart project. Members would have to pay £35 to attend.

With the topic Geology and Fossils Christine would help students to explore and develop techniques to achieve work of exhibition quality.  She will encourage students to experiment with different mediums and help students to develop their own techniques.

We would hope to have at least eight members involved in this project. Students would be encouraged to do their own individual projects – but after the one day workshop Christine would still offer advice and help to enable them to complete the project with the aim to put work into an exhibition.
