Here are three samples of the sort of
thing we will be doing. I have enough hessian for everyone (1 and 2). I will
bring my wool carder and fleece (2). I have plenty of glass and plastic balls
(3). I also have small quantities of everything else.
Sample 1
Loose weave hessian with wrapped circular gaps, then threaded with vertical yarn.
Requirements for Sample 1
- Hessian (Kate)
- Coloured wool/ribbon for verticals
- Crochet cotton pearl in natural thread
- Coloured embroidery thread
- Backing canvas
- Drawing pins
- Sewing kit with scissors and large needle

Sample 2
Loose weave hessian woven with strips of fleece. It would be good if you could look at wool carding on U-tube to have an idea of how to do it.
Requirements
for sample 2
- Hessian (Kate)
- Large crochet hook
- Wool carder to mix colours and fleece (Kate)
- Either backing canvas or short stick to sew on back (with short piece of string to tie on stick)
- Sewing kit with scissors
Sample 3
Knitting with various sorts of hairy twine,
adding items associated with the beach
Requirements
for Sample 3
- Natural fibre string of various types – the hairier the better
- Crochet cotton pearl in natural thread
- Large knitting needles (for backing) and small knitting needles (for ball)
- Shells with holes (or shells that can be attached with string in other ways)
- Glass or plastic balls (Kate)
- Stick for hanging
- Sewing kit with scissors
I was inspired by a wall hanging by Davida MacDonald, which I saw in Herfordshire in 2008 and also by Joan Richardson’s work, a Lincolnshire textile artist and member of Nolitex.
